Abstract

Gold nanoparticle-based photonic crystals have emerged as an advanced class of nanophotonic materials capable of significantly enhancing optical properties through strong plasmonic–photonic interactions. These hybrid nanostructures combine the periodic optical modulation of photonic crystals with the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) characteristics of gold nanoparticles, enabling exceptional control over light propagation, confinement, absorption, and emission at the nanoscale. The present study investigates the mechanisms of optical enhancement in gold nanoparticle-based photonic crystals using a comprehensive analytical and review-based approach. The study focuses on plasmonic coupling, electromagnetic field confinement, photonic bandgap engineering, nonlinear optical response, and enhanced photoluminescence characteristics in relation to advanced photonic applications. The findings indicate that integration of gold nanoparticles into photonic crystal architectures significantly improves optical absorption, scattering efficiency, refractive index modulation, fluorescence enhancement, and nonlinear optical behavior. Enhanced light–matter interaction arising from plasmonic resonance and photonic bandgap overlap contributes to ultrafast optical response and improved sensing performance. The results further reveal that nanoscale engineering of gold nanoparticle size, shape, spacing, and photonic crystal geometry enables tunable optical characteristics suitable for biosensors, optical filters, photovoltaic systems, nanolasers, and integrated photonic devices. Despite challenges related to fabrication precision, optical losses, and large-scale integration, gold nanoparticle-based photonic crystals represent a highly promising platform for future nanophotonic and optical communication technologies.
