Wound healing is a complex biological process that involves a sequence of overlapping phases including hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. Delayed or improper healing can lead to chronic wounds, infections, and increased healthcare burden. Conventional wound treatment methods such as gauze dressings, ointments, and surgical interventions often fail to provide an ideal healing environment. In recent years, hydrogels have emerged as promising wound dressing materials due to their high-water content, biocompatibility, flexibility, and ability to maintain a moist environment at the wound site. These properties support cell migration, tissue regeneration, and protection against microbial invasion. Hydrogel-based dressings can also be designed to absorb excess exudate, deliver therapeutic agents, and promote faster healing of both acute and chronic wounds. This review summarizes the basic concepts of wound healing, existing treatment approaches, and the role of hydrogels as advanced wound dressing systems. Additionally, the applications, advantages, current challenges, and future prospects of hydrogel-based wound dressings are discussed to provide a comprehensive understanding of their potential in modern wound care.
