Abstract

Mixed metal oxides (MMOs) — including spinels, layered oxides, perovskites and binary/ternary transition-metal oxide composites — are promising electrode materials for next-generation batteries because they combine rich redox chemistry with tunable structure and composition. However, their practical deployment is often limited by intrinsically low electronic conductivity and structural instability during cycling. This review and experimental-proposal paper synthesizes current understanding of how crystal structure (spinels, layered, perovskite), cation arrangement, defect chemistry, and nanoscale morphology govern electronic and ionic transport in MMOs, and surveys strategies to enhance conductivity: aliovalent doping, hetero-structural composites (carbon, conductive polymers), nanostructuring, and MOF-derived architectures. Representative materials (NiCo₂O₄, MnCo₂O₄, Fe₂O₃–Mn₂O₃ composites, perovskite oxides) are discussed alongside synthesis routes (sol–gel, hydrothermal, thermal decomposition, MOF-derived) and characterization techniques (XRD, TEM, XPS, EIS, four-point probe, galvanostatic cycling). The paper proposes an experimental workflow to correlate structural motifs and defect populations with electronic conductivity and electrochemical performance, aiming to accelerate rational design of high-performance MMO electrodes.
